Language, Listening and Communication in the Early Years: An Introduction to supporting deaf children
There are more children being diagnosed and fitted with hearing aids earlier resulting in increased numbers of Early Years children requiring specialist support. Many settings find themselves wanting to support these children effectively and are actively looking at options for their own awareness development.
The early years are a critical age for deaf children to develop their play and thinking skills and to do this they need access to language. This course will give you an overview of what it is like to be deaf and how deafness can impact on listening, spoken and communication skills, as well as social development.
One-day virtual Child Protection Inter-Agency refresher course is for delegates with safeguarding children responsibilities. Refresher courses are for those delegates who have already undertaken the 'Safeguarding Children Training Level 3 - Initial Training Course'. Group 3 and above are required to attend an inter-agency safeguarding update or refresher: schools every 2 years; early years and others every 3 years.
This is a two-day, multi-agency course for Group 3 delegates with safeguarding responsibilities (named/designated staff) and/or those working regularly with children and young people who have a duty to learn more about child protection as specified in Working Together to Safeguard Children and Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Attachment Based Beginnings online course for practitioners working with pre-reception aged children in early years settings (Equivalent to 2 days learning)
This course has been created in partnership with our Early Years, Educational Psychology and Social Emotional and Mental Health teams. Sometimes we can be at a loss to know how to respond to children and we can feel disempowered or frustrated that we don’t seem to be able to manage a child’s behaviour. This course will help you build the skills you need to see beyond the behaviour and begin to understand what that behaviour is telling us. More importantly it will help us understand how we can respond differently to support that child.
Attachment Based Beginnings is designed to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of staff working with pre-Reception children aged 2 years plus.
The Attachment Based Mentoring Programme aims to meet the specific needs of children who are most in need, by providing them with a significant adult in school who will become a safe base and is able to provide relational support through coaching and mentoring. The training draws on theories and research from the fields of attachment, coaching and resilience. ABM is a comprehensive practical guide as to what to do and how to be to ensure that the individual needs of each child are met.
This online course is roughly equivalent in time to 3 day course, but can be completed in your own time however best works for you. We do recommend having a learning partner at school to discuss your learning and development with. The course will involve a mix of learning activities including videos, audio slides, reading, exploration, activities, personal reflection and sharing thoughts, ideas and plans with others on the course.
The approach aims to enable children to feel safe, connected, and capable - forming positive relationships and enjoying learning.
A personalised, inspirational programme for senior leaders with cross-school responsibilities including experienced middle leaders, deputy heads, SENCOs, subject leaders working across MATs and SLEs. We welcome applicants from across Devon and the South West. Starts in October 2020.

The NPQSL programme is designed to develop the leadership potential of Senior Leaders leading a team across their school. They will be supported to further develop key leadership behaviours: Vision, Collaboration, Personal Drive, Resilience, Interpersonal and Intra-personal Awareness, Integrity and Respect.
They will achieve this through an improvement project that they will work with a team across the school to reduce variation in pupil progress and attainment and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching. The programme will last 4 terms by which time they will have submitted for assessment a 5,000 word assignment which covers the initiation, implementation and evaluation of the project.
- Led by an experienced Headteacher and the Director of DTSP who understand whole school improvement processes and the key part distributed leadership plays within its success.

Teach First, in partnership with TSSW, is offering all Secondary NQTs the opportunity to take up the Teach First ‘Early Career Framework’ Programme in 2020-2021.
The main features of the offer are:
- Premium quality programme: Teach First is a leading national training provider which has developed a premium ECF programme for NQTs and NQT+1 through a team of leading expert national advisers
- Blended learning approach: The programme combines self-directed study through a state-of-the-art learning platform, group seminars and instructional coaching with the in-school Mentor; the approach is not reliant on NQTs going off-site, which in the COVID-19 recovery phase will maximise time spent in lessons.
- Builds high impact mentoring: NQT mentor will receive training and support to hone instructional coaching skills. Mentors will have full access to the ECF learning platform, so they can track and support NQT progress.
- Free programme with unlimited places: the DfE are rolling out early the ECF in response to COVID 19 to strengthen support for NQTs who would have had a shortened teacher training year. All aspects of training for NQTs and Mentors are free. Cover costs and travel expenses will also be significantly reduced.
- Combining strong local expertise: TSSW will play a key partnership role in delivery. Early career leads from TSSW will be trained to deliver the Teach First programme, including the webinars for NQTs and Mentors and as well as Mentor Group Sessions. This enables us to combine strong local expertise with a premium national programme.

Two Rivers Institute is pleased to be able to offer a full range of NQT Induction and Programme Services to local schools.
The appointment of an Appropriate Body (AB) is a statutory requirement for the induction period of NQTs and an NQT cannot start their induction until their Appropriate Body has been agreed. As an AB, TRI will undertake the necessary verification and administrative processes on your behalf.
This will include:
- Registering the NQT with ourselves and the Teaching Regulation Agency
- Maintaining records and assessment reports
- Making the final decision as to whether or not the NQT’s performance against the Teaching Standards is satisfactory, drawing on the recommendations of the Headteacher/Principal
- Notifying the Teaching Regulation Agency of the decision
- Providing a named contact and advice line for support and guidance
NQT Induction Services
In addition to TRI’s role acting as an Appropriate Body to undertake the verification of NQT induction assessments, TRI is able to support schools by providing access to a full range of services to ensure that all NQTs are successfully inducted into the teaching profession.
This can include but is not limited to:
- Training for NQT mentors in Summer Term of AY1920 to ensure the mentors are fully prepared to support their NQTs in AY2021
- Programme of professional themes seminars aimed specifically at NQTs
- Lesson observations with developmental feedback (written and verbal) against the teaching standards
- Coaching sessions
